MSX™

MODULUS SACCHARIDE MATRIX

Sugar-based chemistry.
Serious cleaning performance.

MSX™ is the sugar-derived surfactant architecture developed by Modulus Labs to build high-performance cleaning systems without relying on yesterday’s formulation playbook.

First developed through demanding automotive cleaning applications.
Now engineered for the home.

WHY MSX EXISTS

Cleaning has changed.
A lot of cleaning chemistry hasn’t.

For decades, cleaning products have been built around familiar surfactant systems because they are cost-effective, understood and straightforward to formulate.

That does not automatically make them bad. But it also does not mean formulation should stop moving forward.

Can modern sugar-derived surfactant chemistry deliver the cleaning performance we demand while giving us a more versatile platform to formulate around?

Modulus Labs started with that question. The answer became MSX™.

THE “SUGAR” BIT

No. We haven’t put
a spoonful of sugar
in your cleaner.

“Sugar-derived” describes the origin and structure of a family of surfactants. MSX formulations can use alkyl polyglucosides—usually shortened to APGs—as part of the surfactant architecture.

An APG has a water-attracting sugar-derived head and a water-repelling tail. That two-sided behaviour helps cleaning solution meet oily or greasy soil.

Surfactants help water do something it isn’t very good at doing alone: clean oily dirt.

HOW MSX WORKS

It isn’t about foam.
It’s about what happens
at the surface.

01

WET

The formulation spreads across the contaminated surface and reaches the soil.

02

LOOSEN

Surfactants interact at the boundary between water, surface and contamination.

03

LIFT

Oily and particulate contamination can be mobilised into the cleaning solution.

04

REMOVE

Suspended contamination is carried away by wiping, rinsing or the wash process.

Foam can be useful. Foam can be satisfying. Foam is not the same thing as cleaning power.

THE MATRIX

One platform.
Different chemistry
for different jobs.

The “Matrix” in Modulus Saccharide Matrix matters. MSX is not one ingredient dropped into every product. It is a formulation architecture.

The surfactant system is one part of the finished product. Depending on the application, Modulus Labs can tune the wider formulation around appropriate surfactant combinations, chelation, pH, builders, solvents where required, soil suspension, rinse behaviour, concentration and contact time.

WHERE IT STARTED

Before the kitchen,
there was the car.

MSX did not begin as a Homecare marketing concept. Modulus Labs developed the approach through Modulus Autocare, where chemistry has to deal with demanding contamination across paint, plastics, fabrics and coated surfaces.

Road film. Interior contamination. Oils. Traffic grime. Repeated cleaning. Different surfaces. One uncompromising requirement: the formulation has to earn its place.

MSX × AUTOCARE

Sugar Rush

A contact shampoo built around modern sugar-derived surfactant chemistry.

A contact wash asks for wetting, useful lubrication, soil interaction, surface compatibility and clean rinsing. Sugar Rush uses an APG-focused blended surfactant system in a pH-neutral maintenance shampoo designed for the contact-wash stage after pre-wash.

It helped establish a central Modulus idea: sugar-derived surfactant chemistry does not need to be confined to gentle-looking products that avoid demanding cleaning work.

MSX × AUTOCARE

Shug Daddy

Sugar-derived chemistry adapted for interior cleaning.

Interior cleaning is a different problem. Shug Daddy is a concentrated interior APC for plastics, vinyl, rubber, trim and other hard cabin surfaces, with dilution matched to the task.

The application calls for controlled cleaning across varied materials without pretending that a shampoo and an interior cleaner should share the same recipe.

Why stop
at the garage?

MSX™ is now coming home.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Same thinking.
A completely
different environment.

Homecare brings cooking grease, fingerprints, soap scum, limescale, floor soils, laundry soils, food residues and appliance build-up.

Modulus Labs did not simply pour an automotive formulation into a Home bottle. The MSX platform had to be adapted around each job.

We brought the platform.
Not the formula.

APPLICATION-SPECIFIC

Powered by MSX™ doesn’t mean formulated identically.

A glass cleaner and a laundry detergent solve fundamentally different problems. MSX does not force them into the same recipe. It provides a framework for choosing the chemistry around the task.

MORE THAN SURFACTANTS

Sometimes the problem
isn’t grease.

Hard-water minerals can interfere with cleaning and contribute to deposits. In relevant formulations, chelating agents can bind metal ions and help the wider system work as intended.

No single chelator is implied across every product. The choice belongs to the application and the documented formulation.

Ca²⁺MINERAL ION+⌬CHELATOR→Ca²⁺CONTROLLED COMPLEX

Surfactants deal with one part of the cleaning problem. Good formulation deals with the whole system.

THE MODULUS APPROACH

We don’t formulate
for the demo video.
We formulate for the clean.

More foam does not automatically mean more cleaning.

More fragrance does not automatically mean cleaner.

More colour does not mean stronger chemistry.

Extreme pH is not automatically better.

“Natural” is not automatically better.

“Synthetic” is not automatically worse.

Good chemistry is chemistry chosen appropriately for the job.

MSX IS

  • A Modulus Labs formulation platform
  • Built around sugar-derived surfactant chemistry
  • Application-specific
  • Designed around cleaning performance
  • Adaptable across categories
  • Continuously developed

MSX ISN’T

  • Table sugar
  • One magic molecule
  • The same recipe in every product
  • A claim that conventional chemistry is inherently bad
  • “Chemical-free”
  • An excuse for vague green marketing

THE SIMPLE VERSION

Don’t care about
surfactant chemistry?
Fair enough.

You should not need a chemistry degree to clean your kitchen. MSX matters because the chemistry is our problem, not yours. Your job is to choose what you are cleaning. Our job is to formulate the right product for it.

BEHIND THE FORMULA

Developed by
Modulus Labs.

Modulus Labs is the technical development arm behind Modulus products. It develops and evolves the formulation systems that individual Modulus brands take to market.

For Home, that means the chemistry is developed around the cleaning problem first—then presented as a product.

MSX FAQ

Questions worth asking.

No evasive language. No “chemical-free” theatre. Just the clearest answer the current evidence supports.

01What does MSX stand for?+

MSX stands for Modulus Saccharide Matrix. It is the name Modulus Labs gives to its sugar-derived, application-specific formulation architecture.

02What is Modulus Saccharide Matrix?+

It is a framework for building cleaning products around the interaction of surfactants, chelation, soil, surface, concentration, contact and removal. It is not one fixed recipe.

03Does MSX contain sugar?+

Not table sugar. Sugar-derived describes the feedstock and structure used to make certain surfactants, including alkyl polyglucosides, that can form part of an MSX surfactant system.

04What are sugar-derived surfactants?+

They are surface-active ingredients made using a sugar-derived water-attracting portion and a water-repelling chain. That two-sided structure helps water interact with oily or hydrophobic soil.

05What is an APG?+

APG is short for alkyl polyglucoside, a family of nonionic surfactants. APGs can contribute wetting and detergency inside a properly designed blend.

06Is MSX one ingredient?+

No. MSX is a formulation architecture. The finished system may combine suitable surfactants with other components selected for the cleaning task.

07Does every Modulus Home product use the same formula?+

No. Glass, laundry, kitchen and bathroom cleaning present different soils, surfaces and removal processes, so the balance of each formula changes.

08Why did Modulus use this technology in Autocare first?+

Automotive cleaning provided demanding combinations of road film, oily contamination and varied surfaces. It gave Modulus a practical environment in which to develop the wider approach.

09Which Autocare products use sugar-derived surfactant chemistry?+

Current documented examples include Sugar Rush contact shampoo and Shug Daddy interior APC concentrate. That does not mean every Modulus Autocare product uses MSX.

10Is MSX natural?+

Natural and synthetic are not useful shortcuts for performance or safety. MSX uses modern formulation choices, including sugar-derived surfactants where appropriate, and each finished product must be considered on its own formulation.

11Does sugar-derived automatically mean biodegradable?+

No. Feedstock origin alone does not prove the behaviour of a complete formulation. Any biodegradability statement must relate to documented ingredients or testing rather than the word sugar-derived.

12Is MSX environmentally friendly?+

MSX is not presented as an environmental certification. Modulus uses concentrated formats and considered ingredient choices where appropriate, while avoiding blanket claims about an entire formulation platform.

13Why do Modulus products not rely on huge amounts of foam?+

Foam can help application and user feedback, but foam height is not a direct measure of cleaning. Wetting, soil interaction, suspension and removal matter too.

14What does chelation do?+

In relevant products, a chelating agent can bind metal ions such as hard-water minerals. This can reduce interference with the cleaning system and help control mineral-related deposits.

15Who develops MSX?+

MSX is developed and evolved by Modulus Labs, the technical development arm behind Modulus products.

16Is MSX exclusive to Modulus?+

MSX is Modulus Labs’ name for its own formulation architecture. Modulus does not claim that the underlying ingredient families are exclusive or that MSX is a patented molecule.
